Magdalena Los: Time, Space & Opportunity

Peter Mertes Stipendium 2020

October 9 – November 7, 2021

Opening: Friday 8 October, 7-9pm

Time, Space & Opportunity – Peter Mertes Stipendium 2020

Titled Time, Space & Opportunity, Magdalena Los, Peter Mertes recipient 2020, presents a series of new works that emerge from a painterly and conceptual practice. In Los' collaged worlds of images, everyday views collide with private screenshots or references to popular film scenes, works of art and children's stories. The alternately surreal, comic or naturalistic motifs revolve again and again around the relationship between work, time and value, with humour and seriousness always in balance. Some of the female figures in Los' imaginary spaces refer to a psychological as well as physical interior – an intimate moment of being thrown back onto oneself. The figurative mode of representation serves Los as a means of finding an image or figure for certain longings and desires – a method to explore the particular area between the two questions “What do I want?” and “What can I do?” Magdalena Los (b. 1987, Jastrzębie-Zdrój, PL) studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. Her works have been exhibited at PiK, Cologne; Klosterruine, Berlin; Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg (all 2020) and Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2019), among others. In 2021 she was awarded the Friedrich-Vordemberge-Stipendium of the City of Cologne. She lives and works in Cologne. Los‘ presentation at the Bonner Kunstverein is accompanied by a publication, designed by Johannes Hucht. The exhibition is generously supported by the Peter Mertes Wine Company with additional support from Stiftung Kunstfonds. Founded in 1985, the Peter Mertes Stipendium annually honours two young artists in North Rhine-Westphalia whose artistic practice is supported for the duration of one year by a working stipend.
