Gillian Carnegie's paintings and drawings are quietly, calmly and hauntingly uncanny, while possessing a highly precise emotional tenor. Her works are highly analytical, systematic and yet quirky in their revisiting of traditional painting genres such as still life, landscape, portrait and nude. Carnegie draws on these old, traditional genres to create works of remarkable presence, as in this depiction of an interior with a cat - a subject that is depicted with great care and a sense of narrative, yet whose intentionality remains partially hidden. Gillian Carnegie (b. 1971, Suffolk, England) has been shown in solo exhibitions at dépendance Brussels (2019); Cabinet Gallery, London (2017); Galerie Gisela Capitain, Cologne (2013) and has participated in exhibitions at Gladstone Gallery, New York (2020); Greene Naftali, New York (2019); Whitechapel Gallery, London (2017) and Tate Britain, London (2013). Carnegie lives and works in London.
