Sophie von Hellermann's narrative pictorial worlds manifest themselves with large, rapid brushstrokes on unprimed canvas. The fleeting brushstrokes create an image that seems to spring directly from Hellermann's imagination. Inspired by highly cultural and trivial myths and motifs, a tongue-in-cheek undertone always shimmers through, as in Hellermann's annual edition, which takes up the biblical story of Susanna in the bath. Sophie von Hellermann (b. 1977, Munich) has had solo exhibitions at Greene Naftali, New York (2019, 2013); Pilar Corrias, London (2020, 2018); Kunstverein Hannover; Office Baroque, Brussels (2017) and Vilma Gold, London (2015), among others. She lives and works in London.
