While practicing what could be described as both conceptual as well as performance art, Yuki Okumura could just as well be described as an art historian. The works by Okumura hone into areas of art history that are just as much niche as they are pivotal, asking what does this historical act look like now. In this work, in relation to his ongoing project Measuring Roman Ondak (2015-), the artist tasked the two organizers of the Jahresgaben to imagine and draw the artist Roman Ondak visiting the Bonner Kunstverein. Following only directions given by Okumura, the two curators construct the image of the artist as they picture him. In this sense, Okumura not only makes Ondak a performer in the work, but with the illustrations provides an aggregate sense of how artists and their art works are seen by others. Yuki Okumura (b. 1978) lives and works in Brussels and Maastricht. He has had solo exhibitions at the Keio University Art Center, Tokyo (2019); La Maison de Rendez-vous, Brussels (2019) and Misako & Rosen, Tokyo (2015). His work has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo (2019), Établissement d’en face, Brussels (2015); and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2013).
