Magali Reus has a carefully attuned sense of objecthood, materiality and its potential to inhabit a sense of liveness or presence. Her practice often draws on a spirit of the everyday thing, but through a process of making, oscillating between craft-based and technological production, the works become detached from its stable material identity or association. In Knaves (Palefoot Parachutes), 2021, the photograph moves between up-close sharpness and abstraction, the soft porosity of the enoki mushrooms against plastic wrapping and bright textile. Each element of the work, from the image in itself to the modelled frame and the metal "passepartout" are connected into one ambivalent object and carefully balanced meditation on the organic and the inorganic, material memory and product. Magali Reus (b. 1981, The Hague, NL) has had solo and group exhibitions at The Approach, London (2021); Kunstmuseum Winterthur (2021); Bergen Kunsthall (2017); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016); The Hepworth, Wakefield (2015); and Sculpture Centre, New York (2015). She lives and works in London.
