Lothar Hempel’s collages quote from a range of sources, often referring to characters from the stage or cinema within compositions that resemble theatrical props or scenery. This series of works employs a 1980’s portrait of a ‘Reneegirl’ (skinhead) published on social media. Hempel’s title, inscribed across the image, draws attention to the contrast between what he describes as the ‘cold indifference of the Instagram interface’ and the latent ‘rage’ captured in the original image, ‘like a church-bell still ringing although the church is in ruins’. Lothar Hempel (b. 1966, Cologne) has held solo exhibitions at The Kitchen, New York (2014); Museum Kleines Klingental, Basel (2013); La Conserva, Murcia (2012); Le Magasin, Grenoble (2007); Dallas Museum of Art; ICA, London (2002) and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1998). His work is held in several major public collections including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and Museum of Modern Art, New York. Hempel lives and works in Berlin.
