Mural and Muse is an assemblage and book object by Monika Baer. Embedded into the open spread of folded and cut pages is the image of Isabel Nicholas, a British painter, scenery designer, model and muse. Reclining in bed, Nicholas' looks into the camera, displaying a brick wall drawn with pencil onto her bare arm. Her representation sits in the object like an insert, a page marker, as if revealing itself in the act of leafing through the book. She meets the eye and blocks the view. Monika Baer (b. 1964, Freiburg im Breisgau) lives and works in Berlin. She has exhbited at Kunsthalle Bern; Greene Naftali, New York (both 2021); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein; Kunstmuseum Bonn (both 2019); Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach and Kestnergesellschaft, Hanover (both 2016).
