GCC is an artist “delegation” or collective composed of seven members who each have strong ties to the Arabian Gulf region of the Middle East. The acronym `GCC´, alludes to (but does not stand for) the Gulf Cooperative Council and their installations, sculptures, videos and photographic works examine the rapid transformation of that region in recent decades. This photograph belongs to a series that addresses nationalist aesthetics and its shared visual heritage in the gulf through the use of found objects or motifs. Prior to the emergence of the modern oil industry, pearls were the basis of international trade in the region and they remain a potent symbol. GCC was formed in 2013 and have exhibited at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; Museum Sztuki Łódź (2018); Whitechapel Gallery, London; 9th Berlin Biennial(2016); Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2015); Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE; the New Museum and MoMA PS1, New York (2014); and at the Fridericianum, Kassel (2013).
