Von Hellermann’s large-scale narrative paintings draw upon a range of cultural references. This series of allegorical paintings refer to recent events in European politics and feature characters from Hergé’s ‘Tintin’ comics. Sophie von Hellermann (b. 1975, Munich) has held solo exhibitions at Firstsite, Colchester (2013); Museum Dhondt- Daenens, Deurle (2010) and Le Consortium, Dijon (2009). Her work has been presented within significant survey exhibitions including ‘Empathy and Abstraction: Modernist Women in Germany’ at Kunsthalle Bielefeld (2015) and ‘Watercolour’ at Tate Britain, London (2011). She lives and works in Margate and is part of the artist collective, hobbypopMUSEUM who exhibited at Bonner Kunstverein in 2002.
