Vance’s paintings merge representation with abstraction. Objects and images become submerged within the surface of her compositions during the process of painting so that the image gives way to a more open ended, gestural exploration of colour, light and space. Lesley Vance (b. 1977, Milwaukee) has exhibited within significant group surveys such as ‘Variations: Conversations in and around Abstract Painting’, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2014); ‘Painter Painter’, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2013) and the 2010 Whitney Biennial, New York. Her work is held in several major public collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Whitney Museum, New York. Vance lives and works in Los Angeles.
