Composed in two layers, Osborne’s painting brings together motifs familiar from previous works to make what he has described as an ‘abstract painting out of very literal things’. Whilst Osborne’s interest in the Rubber Plant is focused on in its banality, apples are conversely loaded with allegorical significance. He has described this painting as an exercise in thinking about the work of Willem de Kooning (b. 1904, d. 1997) via the French academic painting of Henri Fantin-Latour (b. 1836, d.1904). Oliver Osborne (b. 1985, Edinburgh) held a solo exhibition at Bonner Kunstverein in 2018. His work has also been exhibited at Inverleith House, Edinburgh (2017); the German Embassy, London (2017); Museo di Capodimonte, Naples (2014) and the ICA, London (2012). He lives and works in Berlin.
