With her photographic and installation works, Susanne M. Winterling examines the interactive connectedness of objects, human bodies and other organisms in order to undermine traditional hierarchies and focus on the marginal, overlooked or the suppressed. Winterling's photography refers to the dancer Isadora Duncan, who rejected ballet as a symbol of rigid social structures and advocated for a new, natural form of dance: without a corset and lace shoes, but instead barefoot and with a silk scarf. Ironically, the same silk scarf became her death trap in 1927. Susanne M. Winterling (b. 1970, Rehau) has held solo exhibitions at Kunstverein Langenhagen (2016); Kunstverein Amsterdam; Ludlow 38, New York (2014)and Salzburger Kunstverein (2012). Her work has been also shown at Deutsches Hygiene Museum, Dresden, (2019); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2017); Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina (2015), Fridericianum, Kassel (2014) and Charlottenborg Kunsthal, Kopenhagen (2013). Susanne M. Winterling lives in Berlin.
