Our monthly dinners and gatherings continue on Tuesday 4th July, 7pm with a talk entitled “Permazirkulär? Kunst/Institutionen in der Nachhaltigkeitsschleife” by Professor Birgit Mersmann. In sustainability economics, “permacircularity” advocates resizing organisations in correspondence with Earth systems, while also retooling knowledge and practices towards planetary reparation. This is a gathering reflecting both on some of the potentialities for art institutions to acquire an exemplary and radical role in practices of sustainability, whilst also zooming in on some of the paradoxes and tensions at the heart of this mission.

Prof. Dr. Birgit Mersmann studied Art History and Modern German Literature in Munich and Vienna. She received her doctorate from the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich in 1999 and her habilitation from the University of Basel in 2013. Mersmann has held numerous teaching positions since 1998, including at Seoul National University,  Jacobs University in Bremen, University of Cologne and University of Duisburg-Essen. She has been Professor of Contemporary Art and Digital Image Cultures at the University of Bonn since 2023.
