Claus Richter

A Small Toy, 2016

25 x 25 x 30 cm

Wood, varnish
Edition of 3, certificate, signed

Claus Richter’s edition is inspired by children’s toys designed in the 20th century and in particular the so-called 'Sonntagsreiter', created by Richard Riemerschmid for the Dresdner Werkstätten Hellerau. The three figures and the fence can be manipulated to suggest various narratives such as entrapment or escape, playfully referencing the sociological significance of toys. Claus Richter (b. 1971, Lippstadt) has held exhibitions at Basis, Frankfurt (2016); Kölnischer Kunstverein (2014 and 2011) and the Leopold Hoesch Museum, Düren (2010). Recent commissions include ‘Wonderland Avenue’, a performance-based work produced in collaboration with the writer Sibylle Berg for Frieze Projects, London (2016). He will have a solo exhibition at Clages, Cologne in April, 2017. Richter lives and works in Cologne.
