Ellen Yeon Kim
a study for 'Daddy Daddy Daddy', 2021
45 × 46 cm
Engraving and embroidery on wood, lace fabric
Unique, with certificate
In her performative and sculptural works, Ellen Yeon Kim explores the conditions and ambivalent feelings of security and personal freedom. With a study for 'Daddy Daddy Daddy', the artist adopts the form of the moveable doll's house "Punch and Judy", a traditional English puppet theatre, which originates from the Italian Commedia dell'arte from the 16th century. The well-known motto "That's the way to do it!", which the violent main character Mr Punch proclaims every time he defeats one of his enemies, Kim counteracts by a handmade and delicate embroidery. Ellen Yeon Kim (b. 1985, Daegu, KR) will have a colo presentation at Bonner Kunstverein in 2022 as part of the Peter Mertes Stipendium. Her work has been shown Kölnischer Kunstverein; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe (both 2018) and Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2016). She lives and works in Cologne.
