Erica Baum is known for her close-ups of books, newspapers and other printed matter. Fascinated by the approaches to language in concrete poetry, Baum creates coincidental, often enigmatic juxtapositions of word and image fragments. By photographing old softcover books with a shallow depth-of-field, the artist not only transposes the texture of the paper, yellowing tones or the application of ink into an abstract image, but she also composes a space for new associations evolving from the fanned out pages. Erica Baum (b. 1961, New York) has held solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2019); Künstlerhaus Halle für Kunst & Medien, Graz (2018) and the Guggenheim Museum, New York (2015). She took part at the Athens Biennale (2013) and the São Paulo Biennale (2012). She lives and works in New York.
