Inspired by archaeology, philosophy and science fiction, José Montealegre creates fictional worlds that explore the interweaving of nature and culture. The works on paper framed on coloured glass revolve around aspects of temporality and authenticity. What initially appears to be a page torn out of an old book on botany or art history turns out on closer inspection to be a subsequent reworking by the artist, revealing the manipulability of historiography and knowledge systems. José Montealegre (born 1992, Tegucigalpa, HN) completed his studies in Judith Hopf's class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt in 2019. His works were shown in: CONVENT-Space for Contemporary Art, Ghent (2019); Städel Museum, Frankfurt; Projektraum im KunstWerk, Cologne (2019); Gillmeier Rech, Berlin (2018) and Kunsthalle Darmstadt (2017). He lives and works in Florence.
