Dana Lok is interested in the historical processes and techniques of graphic narratives in early cartoon cinema. These techniques, such as sliding glass where backgrounds would be drawn on—allowing the perception of movement and depth of field behind characters—heralded a new type of moving picture. Lok investigates these histories in her paintings by turning the forms—textual or figurative—into running narratives, imbued with their own time structure even if they may stand alone. Dana Lok lives and works in New York. She received her MFA from Columbia University in 2015. She has shown at PAGE, New York (2020), as well Miguel Abreu, New York (2021, 2016).
