A former student of Biology at the University of Bonn, Lempert’s black and white photographs study the natural world, often using the camera to obtain a close-up and detailed perspective. This photograph of the migratory ‘Angle Shades Moth' was taken in the northern German archipelago of Helgoland. Jochen Lempert (b. 1958, Moers) has held major exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver (2016); Cincinnati Art Museum (2015); Hamburger Kunsthalle (2013) and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2012). His work is held in major public collections including Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris and the Federal Collection of Contemporary Art, Germany. Lempert had his first institutional solo exhibition at Bonner Kunstverein in 1997. He lives and works in Hamburg.
