Marc Kokopeli
Coat
2021 various materials 40 × 25 × 23 cm Unique work, with certificate The work of Marc Kokopeli recurrently sits at an intersection of states: a vocabulary and material references raging from notions of care, dependency, consumerism, infantilisation and violence. Coat is part of a series of sculptural works constructed of diapers, and range from saccharine floral motives and pacifiers to miniature gas masks and war-like signs and symbols. Coat is a work beautifully evoking this complex simultaneity of states – baby socks for ears, a feeding bottle for mouth or mask, delicate strings around the wheels and trunk of a military vehicle. In the work of Kokopeli, a suspended state is achieved, where these layers are enabled to exist simultaneously, returning and changing over time and with the perception of the viewer. Marc Kokopeli's (b. 1987) work has been shown at The Wig, Berlin; Bonner Kunstverein (both 2021); Établissement d'en face, Brussels (2019); Édouard Montassut, Paris (2017) and Lomex, New York (2016). He lives and works in New York.
