Jürgen Klauke is considered one of the most important representatives of staged photography and a pioneer of body art. Since the 1970s, Klauke has placed his own body at the centre of his videos, performances and photographs. With the "aestheticisation of the existential", as Klauke himself describes his artistic practice, he transforms the human body beyond the real into a "utopian body" in order to break down conventional notions of identity and sexuality. Jürgen Klauke (born 1943, Kliding near Cochem an der Mosel) has had solo exhibitions at the following institutions, among others: Museum der Moderne, Salzburg (2011); ZKM, Karlsruhe (2010); Kunsthalle Hamburg (2002); Bundeskunsthalle Bonn and The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (2001). His work has also been shown at: Museum Folkwang, Essen (2020); Kunstmuseum Bonn (2019) and at the Kunstsammlung NRW; Düsseldorf (2016). He participated in documenta 6 (1977) and documenta 8 (1987). Klauke lives and works in Cologne.
