The work of Silke Otto-Knapp is characterised by a remarkable sensitivity to the pictorial space and its relation with a sense of embodiment. In her practice, she tends to destabilise the relation between figure and ground and establish a stage-like space teetering on the edge between flatness and the illusion of depth. This stage tends to be inhabited by figures, semi-abstracted and depicted in movement or in rest. This silkscreen depicts a reclining female figure, in poised contemplation – a stance speaking both of the choreographed gesture and a carefully attuned sense of intimacy. Silke Otto-Knapp (b.1970, Osnabrück, Germany) lives and works in Los Angeles. Her solo exhibitions have been held at the following institutions, among others: Renaissance Society, Chicago (2020); Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2017); Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto (2015); Kunsthalle Wien; Camden Arts Centre, London (both 2014); Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (2013); Kunstverein München (2010) and Tate Britain, London (2005).
