Ei Arakawa sees astrology as not being completely separate from technology, as both are augmentations of the body – one physical and one spiritual—and both play into performing roles central to artistic production. In his works, which are as much astral chart as they are digitally conditioned sculptures, he points to historical moments and performances in the history of art – laying out the celestial and cosmological meanings of these instances in time. In his performances, his highlights this spiritual performance between techne and astra and highlights a very specific non-linear time that is central to performance today. Ei Arakawa lives in Los Angeles and received his MFA from Bard College. In 2006 he was a fellow of the Whitney Independent Study Program. He has had solo exhibitions at Artists Space, New York (2021); and the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf (2018). He has performed and exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012); Max Mayer Gallery, Düsseldorf (2020); and Reena Spaulings Fine Art, New York (2016).
